Haptics-e Update: It took a little longer than I expected, but you should have just received for approval the slate of Governing Board Candidates. Thanks to those of you who have already voted! For the rest of you, please take the time to send me your vote and your interest in the Editorial Board. This will let us move on from foundations to framing of the journal! First I'm happy to announce that three task groups have been established with able leaders: Professional Society Relationships Chair: John Hollerbach (jmh@cs.utah.edu) Outreach* to "Bio" haptics community Chair: Rob Howe (howe@arcadia.harvard.edu) Governance Structure Chair: Susan Lederman (lederman@psyc.queensu.ca) Document Technical Standards Chair: Walt Aviles [Tentative] (aviles@sensable.com) * Note the haptic metaphor (http://rcs.ee.washington.edu/CR/Haptics-e/HapticsLang.html) These excellent volunteers are already hard at work! and I'm working with them on schedules and plans. We still need people to 1) Help with the above efforts (contact the chairs) 2) Help to chair or volunteer in others: + Intellectual Property (IP) policy (Needed before we can put anything out on the www). + Dissemination, publicity, and indexing What's Next: I'm hoping we can have a call for papers out to the world by the ASME haptics symposium in Dallas (Nov 17-18). If the call is publicized at ASME, and is successful, then a few paper should come in within a few weeks. To be ready we need a schedule something like the following: Nov. 1 Call for papers ready for Governing Board approval cycle. Nov. 17,18 Approved Call for Papers is announced at ASME meeting in Dallas. Dec. 1st Draft IP Policy is presented to Governing Board. Dec. 15th Approved IP Policy is in place and we can publish the first paper when reviews/revisions are complete. I'm still seeking a chair for the IP task. An excellent resource for this task is going to be university librarians. I've talked with some already who are closely tracking the field of emerging electronic journals and are willing to help. I want to make the definition and operation of Haptics-e more interactive. The Document Tech group will look into ways to provide an interactive www based discussion site so that all can participate. In the meantime, if you have an idea or concern that you would like to broadcast to the whole list, just send it to me and I will post it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Haptics-e The electronic journal of haptics research Expected start of publication: January 1, 1998 http://rcs.ee.washington.edu/CR/Haptics-e (Journal Construction Site!)
