(see http://rcs.ee.washington.edu/CR/Haptics-e for background) I feel that the next step in organizing Haptics-e is to set up some organization. First of all, to maximize the chances of success, we should formalize the process through which we define the journal and make sure everybody's inputs are heard. I will be glad to continue what has evolved into a founding editor role. No one else volunteered and the feedback on my initial efforts has been very encouraging. Next, there must be some governing board who will ratify the structure and the editorial policies of the journal, impose continuity, and provide reassurance of the journal's bona fides and authority. Secondly I would like to start up "task groups" to work on specific issues that we have collectively identified. First I would like to nominate a "Governing Board" who will oversee Haptics-e and formally vote (by email) on policy issues. The main duty of the board members would be to keep focused on the end goals we all share for a highest quality, state of the art journal reflecting the best of haptics research which takes full advantage of modern information technology. They will be asked to review policies for the journal and vote yes or no on them. Detailed drafting of policies would be left to task groups (which board members would be welcome to join if they want to). I have only contacted a few of these people so if your name appears below and you are horrified, please just send me an email and I'll remove your name! I have made the following nominations from the list of people expressing interest and support for the journal. In selecting this list, I have sought to include: 1) excellent haptics researchers 2) representation of the active haptics communities in Europe and Japan. 3) representation of the emerging haptics work in industry. 4) representation of researchers in the "bio" side of haptics - psychophysics, psychology, etc. Nominations to the Governing Board: Antal Bejczy, JPL, Pasadena, Ca Massimo Bergamasco, SSSA, Pisa Italy Vincent Hayward, McGill University, Montreal Michitaka Hirose, University of Tokyo Gerd Hirzinger, DLR, Munich Germany John Hollerbach, University of Utah Roberta Klatzky, Carnegie Melon University, Pittsburg, Pa Susan Lederman, Queens University, Canada Karon McLean, Interval Research Corp., Palo Alto, Ca Bill McNeely, Boeing Company, Bellevue Wa Ken Salisbury, MIT Susumu Tachi, University of Tokyo Tsuneo Yoshikawa, Kyoto University In addition, I would like to get self-nominations of people willing to work in or chair task groups on key issues: 1) Professional Society Relationships. 2) Outreach to "bio" haptics community (promoting paper submissions and recruiting reviewers in this area.) 3) Intellectual Property (Copyright statement and author consent form). 4) Dissemination/indexing (getting attention of librarians, getting indexed in INSPEC, current contents, Sci. Citation index, paper brochure for ASME symposium?? etc.). 5) Document technical standards: (technical formats, document formatting, software versions etc.) 6) Others ?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Response: Please send me two things: 1) Your approval of the above list OR suggestions for the Governing Board (If you are nominated and don't want to be let me know!) I'll accumulate inputs until September 1st. After that time I'll put the nominees up for a formal vote of the entire list. 2) Your interest level in the issues above or others. Would you be willing to chair a task group?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks! sent on Aug. 18, 1997 to hayward@cim.mcgill.ca howe@arcadia.harvard.edu jks@ai.mit.edu marg@ai.mit.edu BERGAMASCO@SSSUP1.SSSUP.IT oboe@dei.unipd.it kazeroon@euler.Berkeley.EDU bda@eos.arc.nasa.gov iwata@kz.tsukuba.ac.jp brooks@cs.unc.edu taylorr@cs.unc.edu hirose@ingram.mech.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp srini@mit.edu verplank@interval.com maclean@interval.com jmh@cs.utah.edu bejczy@telerobotics.jpl.nasa.gov colgate@nwu.edu ronf@eecs.berkeley.edu lederman@pavlov.psyc.queensu.ca klatzky+@andrew.cmu.edu kshimoga@andrew.cmu.edu steve yoshi@mech.kyoto-u.ac.jp yokokoji@mech.kyoto-u.ac.jp tims@ee.ubc.ca tachi@star.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp kosuge@irs.mech.tohoku.ac.jp pai@cs.ubc.ca Ralph_Hollis@saxophone.msl.ri.cmu.edu Gerd.Hirzinger@dlr.de ralf@robotic.dlr.de Dale.Lawrence@Colorado.EDU ljones@mit.edu ihunter@mit.edu burdea@caip.rutgers.edu grluecke@iastate.edu pstewart@ford.com pbuttolo@ford.com wmcneely@espresso.rt.cs.boeing.com troy@redwood.rt.cs.boeing.com chasser@immerse.com louis@immerse.com cramstein@haptic.ca thomas@sensable.com aviles@sensable.com moreyra@cris.com adachi@yrd.suzuki.co.jp dal96@pyungtaik.lge.co.kr fukui@nibh.go.jp msato@pi.titech.ac.jp noma@mic.atr.co.jp forrest@sys.uea.ac.uk blake@u.washington.edu
